How to Create Positive Family Dynamics in the ADHD/LD Household

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Presenters: Susan Bauerfeld, PhD and Jennie Klein, PhD

Managing the dynamic variations and conflicts of needs among family members can be challenging under the best of circumstances. ADHD and LD in one or more family members often adds layers of challenge that can feel disruptive, engulfing, overwhelming, and disheartening. In this workshop, Jennie Klein, PhD and Susan Bauerfeld, PhD will present the following: the keys to maintaining positive family dynamics; the ways in which ADHD and LD can complicate family dynamics; and concrete, practical strategies for creating a positive family climate in a household impacted by ADHD/LD.

Dr. Bauerfeld’s passion is teaching skills that lead to positive, connected relationships, especially skills of self-regulation, anxiety management, and effective communication. Combining the experiences and challenges she encountered while raising her own three boys with her experience in psychotherapy, neuropsychology, cognitive remediation, and ADHD coaching, she works to help parents strengthen their most powerful tool — a supportive, connective relationship with their children.

Dr. Jennie Klein is a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of adolescents, families, and couples. After graduating from Princeton University, she earned a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia, She completed her clinical internship at New York University — Bellevue Hospital. She is also trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Dr. Klein worked at the Freedom Institute, in New York City, coordinating the DBT program, co-leading groups for adults, and seeing individuals and families struggling with addiction and substance abuse issues. After moving to Connecticut in 2014, she developed and served as director of the Intensive Outpatient Program for adolescents at Silver Hill Hospital. She launched her New Canaan private practice in 2015, which is now her full-time focus.
